Part of the Friends committee have been organising a special meeting to coordinate tasks that need doing with volunteers who are willing to do them. We have arranged with Kings Heath Public Library and Kings Heath Local History Society to gather in the Library main reading room on Wednesday November 21 for a discussion and division of tasks. (KHLHS will be meeting in the adjacent room for a guest lecture by Mairi MacDonald on the Gunpowder Plot.) This post is meant to clarify and update a few things. If you have ready access to this website, and are thinking of attending, check back here before the 21st for updates. If you cannot attend – or if you already have some ideas about volunteering – it may be that we can discuss things with you by email or telephone.
We have sent a detailed letter to our members (and have already had some positive responses!) that sets out the broader areas of focus, along with some specific suggestions/requests for volunteers. The basic idea is that the Committee has shrunk while the membership has grown. The committee are offering more in the way of activities (tree surveys) and events (summer fun day, nature walks), but have cut back on long-term initiatives like formalising our charitable status, applying for grants, and networking/interacting with other organisations. So we are looking for volunteers to take on a variety of tasks so that we can increase the range and quality of activities.
We have set out ten areas of activity, ranging from the simple but important task of delivering newsletters to the complex work of liaising with statutory and other voluntary organisations. They are as follows:
- Specific and General committee members
- Events coordinators and Assistants
- Newsletter editor and Contributors
- Newsletter distributors
- Website Editor and Contributors
- Treasurer and Membership
- Funding Wizards
Our intent is to come away from the meeting with a schedule of activities to focus on, and to then direct our efforts to helping people coordinate tasks. The meeting itself will be short, partly because we want to be considerate of the staff and other users of the Library. Note: We had initially planned to start at 7:00 PM, but this will be put back a few minutes while we set up chairs and refreshments. We must be gone by 9:00, so we expect the meeting to last no more than 90 minutes.
Members will have received the detailed letter and may have been able to choose particular areas of interest, so we are hoping that the discussion will consist mainly of identifying the numbers of people interested in each activity, then agreeing the formation of working groups.
So, regardless of whether or not you can attend, if you have an interest in supporting the work we have started, please let us know what kinds of things you are interested in, and we will provide you with some possibilities and direct you to other people with those interests. There is something for everyone!
