Highbury Trust / Ward Committee Meeting – Tonight

Tonight’s Moseley and Kings Heath Ward Committee meeting will include a discussion of the proposed changes to Highbury Trust. It will be based on the reports provided by the Council Trusts & Charities Subcommittee (minutes, correspondence, draft proposal). Representatives of various community groups will be there to comment, ask questions, and raise concerns.

One of the questions will be about what else (in addition to this meeting) the Council will do to promote discussion and seek public input about the proposal. The discussion has so far been closed to the general public, decisions have been taken, and historic, environmental qualities are at risk. At what point will the Trustees start taking account of the wider interest in Highbury?

One of the most important questions will be about the structure of the Trust: why is it that the trust consists entirely of Council members; when will this change? The Charity Commission has obliged the council to make the Trust a separate entity – which should mean that it has a different governing structure, which should be open to the wider community. The Trust is a charity, and should be organised and operated as such.

There will be other questions, possibly about timing, money, housing development, Four Seasons, sitting tenants and so on. The meeting starts at 7:00 at the Moseley CDT. Anyone with an interest in the estate, the park, the future of activities in and around Highbury is encouraged to attend.
