Henburys Garden Talk, Phillada Ballard, 12 Nov

If you’ve seen the November issue of B13 Magazine, you may have read the piece about Highbury Community Partnerships. You may also have seen the clearing and coppicing at a couple of places in the park. Those are two strands of community-based HCP landscape projects happening in the park. The third strand of HCP projects is getting underway with a jointly-sponsored public lecture about the Henburys, which is the first in a series of gardening seminars aimed at getting a group of people to research and develop a restoration garden on the site. The lecture will be by the eminent Highbury landscape historian Phillada Ballard, next Friday, 12 November, from…

    Ward Meeting Report

John Alden and Rajesh Parmar of the Charities and Trusts Subcommittee. Secondly in that Cllr Alden said – in paraphase – that he was less concerned about the reformation of Highbury Trust and more concerned about getting £2.5 million in back rent from the council for the 22 years they’ve been using Highbury Hall, Chamberlain House and grounds. He said at one point, though I cannot quote exactly, that he refuses to adopt the proposed changes to the Trust…

Another Step Toward Sale of Highbury Land & Buildings

It looks as though the Charity Commission supports sale of Chamberlain House & the four gardener’s/caretaker’s cottages. This is quoted from a letter dated 6 August 2007 written by Kate Waring of the Charity Commission to Rajesh Parmar, legal officer for Birmingham City Council and presented as part of a report to the Trusts & Charities Sub-Committee on 21 November. • The Commission acknowledges that the sub-committee is exploring options other than the disposal of Chamberlain House to fund repairs to Highbury Hall. However, we consider that based on the information provided this is still an option it may need to pursue to ensure the future financial viability of the…

    Volunteers Meeting – 21/11/2007

Part of the Friends committee have been organising a special meeting to coordinate tasks that need doing with volunteers who are willing to do them. We have arranged with Kings Heath Public Library and Kings Heath Local History Society to gather in the Library main reading room on Wednesday November 21 for a discussion and division of tasks. (KHLHS will be meeting in the adjacent room for a guest lecture by Mairi MacDonald on the Gunpowder Plot.) This post is meant to clarify and update a few things. If you have ready access to this website, and are thinking of attending, check back here before the 21st for updates. If…
