    Flowering Trees

During the occasional evenings without rain, it’s clear that trees have really come into their own. The giant bird cherry in the main meadow is enveloped in its own scent, and is marvellous to stand under just to breathe it in. The horsechestnuts are also in bloom, and fragrant. The rhododendrons aren’t fragrant, and are just coming into bloom. Several varieties exist in the Chamberlain Gardens area, though none have been identified by specialists. It’s said that these may include rare varieties surviving from Chamberlain’s day. Perhaps someone will do a survey some day: it would be a good task for someone involved with the Rhododendron Society.
